An e-mail quote from American Airlines Customer Relations, 5 February, 2011:

I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your question about family escorting their family members to the gate as they embark on military deployment. We completely understand your desire to do so and we've implemented procedures to allow those not traveling to escort their military loved ones to their departing flights. Family members identified by the military passenger will be given a special document to enter the security checkpoint with valid government issued photo identification. The document must be issued by an American Airlines' agent. We will also allow family members into the gate area on return flights as well. Please note, however, depending on the level of security at your airport, Transportation Security Administration and/or airport personnel could decide to enforce stronger guidelines and decline admittance to non-traveling individuals. We appreciate your flexibility.
